Officine Universelle Buly Kyoto, Bal

We recreated the look of a street to catch people’s attention. The front of the store captures the minimalist essence of Kyoto’s tea houses–sukiya zukuri.

From the outside, straight wood beams, light whitewashed walls, rice paper windows let nothing on of the eclectic adventure inside. The only clue comes from the inscription on the small lamp: Kosui, “Parfums”. As soon as the visitor passes the braided rope curtain, they shift to the atmosphere of a 1920s pharmacy. The pomades and soaps are presented in pyramids for a precise, repetitive geometric effect, offsetting the round shape of the fifty-odd alabaster vases from traditional pharmacy.
